Learning Circle

The Learning Circle - The Foundation of the OpenAgile Process

The LearningCircle is a simple and practical model of effective learning. This model describes a series of four steps for us to follow, four capacities for us to develop, and three related factors to remember as we are using the model. The steps are repeated over and over in a cyclical fashion as work progresses. This repetition gives us the opportunity to develop the capacities. The Learning Circle model applies to both operations and project work. There are also two optional steps that can be used if you are specifically in a project environment.

Here is a depiction of the LearningCircle:

The Four Steps

The four steps of the LearningCircle are followed one after another over and over. Each time through the four steps is called an Iteration. While it is possible to begin an endeavor at any of the fours steps, a normal situation involves starting with the ReflectionStep. As well, these steps are normally followed in a timeboxed manner; each time through the cycle is done in a fixed and consistent amount of time (called the IterationSize), and each step is a fixed proportion of that overall time.

  3. PlanningStep
  4. ActionStep

The Four Capacities

Each capacity is both a prerequisite for taking the associated step and is at the same time increased by its utilization.

  1. DetachmentCapacity supports the ReflectionStep
  2. SearchCapacity supports the LearningStep
  3. LoveCapacity supports the PlanningStep
  4. CourageCapacity supports the ActionStep
